Overcoming Prayer Apathy

Do you have “prayer apathy?” Perhaps you lack a strong desire to pray. Perhaps it is not usually top-of-mind. Maybe it is just not high on your priority list. Or maybe the thought of praying just does not excite you.

If so, you probably do not pray much, even if you know that you should.

I do not know if we can change our passions by sheer force of will, but I know that God can change our heart and bring it in line with His will. When I was younger, I struggled to read the Bible, so I prayed, “God, help me to love Your Word.” Over the next few years, my love for the Bible grew dramatically.

If you are struggling with prayer apathy, here is an easy prayer to get you back on track: “Father, help me to love You more, in Jesus’s name.” This prayer does not have to be fancy, but it does need to be sincere. This is the kind of prayer that God wants to answer and will answer.

Remember that prayer is not a chore; it is a time of intimate fellowship with your Father. Allow yourself time to bask in His love for you. Loving Him back will drive you to spend even more time with Him.

As you surrender and worship and share the love of Jesus with others, your prayer time with God will continue to get better, and better, and better.
