Prayer is Relational and Revealing

Prayer is talking to God. Every time we speak to God, whether verbally or mentally, that is a prayer.

Prayer is relational communication. If it is not relational, then it has been twisted into something that it was never meant to be.

One big reason people struggle to pray is because they do not know the One to whom they are speaking. As a result, it feels awkward and they do not really know what to say. It can be weird trying to talk to someone you do not know.

If we do not really know our Father, we probably will not pray much. If we do not know God, how would we know how He wants to be worshiped? Without a relationship, how would we even know how to bless Him or praise Him?

If we know our Father, we will yearn to have conversations with Him. They will always be fruitful, and they will often be fruitful in many different ways. How could a Christian know the Father yet not want to spend time talking with Him? Is it possible to know Him and not want to be with Him? That sounds backwards if He is as good, loving, and awesome as we say He is.

Perhaps we can use this information like a tool. Think back about your prayer time this past week. Does it demonstrate that you love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength? If not, now you know what to pray for:

“Father, help me to know You more and love You more!”

Just praying more is not our goal. Praying is the method of reaching our goal! As a Christian, our goal is to know God, connect with God, glorify God, and love Him with all our heart. Prayer is simply the relational activity that gets us there.

If you are unsure about praying, here are some tips. Start with basic, but Biblical, prayers. Be humble, sincere, and honest. Surrender, and take the time to listen.

As time goes on, the relationship will grow, the intimacy and closeness will grow, and the conversation will grow.
